The call

Oklahoma owns the far better defense and the healthier quarterback. Mississippi State’s offense was shut out a week ago and its star quarterback is day-to-day — SI reads him as on the wrong side of questionable for Week 8. The market has reversed since Tuesday: after drifting from OU −3.5 to −3, the consensus line is now OU −4.5 with the total down to 44.5 (Action Network, College Football News). The first SEC availability report (due Wednesday evening, Oct. 21) was not yet released at this update and remains the swing input. The models still see a narrow Sooner win — SportsJaw now projects 20–17 and the SP+-blended model has Oklahoma by 1.8 — and so do the numbers.

Projected final
23—20

Oklahoma by three

The Sooners’ elite pass defense meets an MSU offense that was shut out last week, while even Oklahoma’s struggling offense gets a crack at one of the SEC’s worst defenses. Taylor’s foot is the only thing keeping this close. Confidence: medium — it drops to low if the Oct. 21 availability report upgrades Taylor or Bothwell.

Why it lands there

  1. 01Smother the pass. Oklahoma allows 122.5 passing yards per game (4th nationally) and ranks No. 1 in defensive success rate and No. 2 in adjusted EPA/play (SI). MSU’s backup threw for 121 yards and a pick at LSU; Taylor is day-to-day with turf toe.
  2. 02Win the turnover game. Oklahoma is −8 (one database lists −9; 135th nationally) and Mateer has nine giveaways in six games — that’s Mississippi State’s cover path. But MSU is −3 and was shut out with its second string in.
  3. 03Score on a bad defense. Mississippi State allows 28.5 points per game (111th) and 379.5 yards (98th). Even an OU offense ranked 126th in yards per play should find points.
  4. 04Survive the road. OU is 0–2 away from home and just lost another lineman (Fodje); MSU is 2–1 at Davis Wade. If the trenches tilt again, the Bulldogs cover and maybe win outright.

Read: Mateer is turnover-prone (seven picks, nine total giveaways in six games), but this is the one matchup that can revive him: Mississippi State’s pass defense is rated among the worst in the FBS. His seven touchdown passes of 20+ yards are the deep-shot proxy.

Read: Oklahoma’s pass defense leads the SEC and ranks 4th nationally — SI also grades the Sooners No. 1 in defensive success rate and No. 2 in adjusted EPA/play. Taylor (turf toe, suffered Sept. 26 vs Missouri; cast to walking boot) is day-to-day and one outlet reads him as on the wrong side of questionable. Backup Billy Puckett threw for 121 yards and a pick in his first start. This is the game’s biggest mismatch.

Read: OU’s ground game ranks 136th in the FBS at 92.5 yards per game (B/R); Arbuckle barely fed his backs late vs Kentucky. Mississippi State is vulnerable everywhere except per-carry run defense, so this stays a small Bulldog edge. *Allowed figures through 4 games.

Read: State runs the ball well when healthy (50th nationally in rushing yards), but Fluff Bothwell — the team’s leading rusher at 403 yards — sat out at LSU after aggravating a sprained ankle and is questionable, with no update from Lebby on Oct. 19. OU just held Kentucky to 72 rushing yards. *Per-carry figure through 4 games.

On Tuesday, OC Ben Arbuckle said Fodje’s status for Saturday is unclear pending Wednesday evening’s availability report, and that OU’s line depth forced Fodje to stay in hurt vs Kentucky. MSU’s sack leader is Lockhart with two; any SEC front can harass a line allowing a 17% havoc rate.

Read: State’s line is among the nation’s worst in pass protection, Taylor took five sacks vs Alabama, and the starting left guard is questionable. Freshman Jake Kreul (2.5 sacks vs Kentucky, SEC Freshman of the Week) smells blood.

Possession pressure

Oklahoma’s margin is computed from official team stats plus the Kentucky box score; one database lists the Sooners at −9 (135th nationally) rather than the computed −8. Mississippi State’s exact margin is an estimate: the Bulldogs sit at −3 nationally per one source (99th), but a full season fumbles-lost total was not published.

Miss. State margin−3*

What remains open: Oklahoma allowed 27 points off turnovers through five games (official); the Kentucky-game addition was not published. MSU has thrown five interceptions (Taylor 4, Puckett 1) but its full-season fumbles-lost count was not found, so its margin is presented as the reported −3 rather than a computed figure.

Field goals & field position

Both kickers have range past 50. Ferrie is the steadier career leg (school record holder); Sandell is streaky but has made the biggest kicks of Oklahoma’s season. Punt averages for both are single-game or partial-season samples.

Ball placement & rushing upside

Where premium tracking metrics were unavailable, the analysis uses clearly labeled proxies rather than pretending the missing numbers exist.

9.4

Taylor yards per pass attempt (when healthy)

The best placement proxy available. Taylor completed 66.2% at 9.4 yards per attempt with 17 TDs — then turf toe (suffered Sept. 26 vs Missouri) ended his LSU trip before kickoff. If he is limited or out, MSU has no comparable downfield threat.

  • No public on-target or adjusted completion rates were found for either quarterback. Mateer’s proxies: 65.1% completions, 7.5 yards per attempt, nine TDs against seven interceptions; seven touchdown passes of 20+ yards.
  • Oklahoma rushing proxy: 92.5 yards per game (136th nationally) — among the worst in the FBS. No yards-after-contact or explosive-run splits were published.
  • MSU rushing proxy: 176.5 yards per game (50th) through Week 7; the 5.5 yards-per-carry figure is through four games. Bothwell (403 yards, team lead) is questionable.
  • Line-play proxy: sacks allowed/generated and havoc rate; public line-yards and TFL-allowed splits were unavailable. MSU’s team sack leader is Lockhart (2).

Sources & caveats

Statistics are a dated snapshot through Week 7, compiled October 20, 2026; lines, model projections and weather were refreshed October 21, 2026. Taylor’s status, the first SEC availability report of the week (due Wednesday evening, Oct. 21 — not yet released as of the Oct. 21 morning update), and betting lines can change before kickoff. Books still split on the spread (BetMGM listed OU −2.5 / 46.5 while Action Network, CFN and SportsJaw showed −4.5 / 44.5). Several season totals were computed by adding Week 7 box scores to the last published official stats. Team stat ranks (offense, defense, turnovers) are from Bleacher Report’s Oct. 20 game hub; its Taylor yardage figure (1,450) matches multiple outlets against a lone 1,750 reported by Saturday Down South, which is treated as an error.
