The call

The line moved five points from the Sunday open and held. South Carolina is rested, at home, and getting healthier; Tennessee is on its eighth straight game, off the emotional high of the Alabama win, in a stadium that has eaten the Vols alive.

Projected final
24—23

South Carolina by one

LaNorris Sellers is playing the best ball of his season (six touchdowns, no picks in his last two games) behind an offense that ranks 13th nationally in adjusted EPA/play, and a rested Dylan Stewart-led front faces a Tennessee line that has allowed 18 sacks — tied for 120th nationally. Tennessee’s elite run game and nation-best turnover margin keep it a one-score game, but the situational pile tips it to the Gamecocks.

Why it lands there

  1. 01The spot. South Carolina is off a bye; Tennessee is on its eighth straight game, coming off the emotional Alabama win. The Vols have won two of their last eight trips to Williams-Brice — including the 63–38 nightmare in 2022. The line moved five points from Tennessee −2.5 to South Carolina −2.5 with no injury news: pure situational money.
  2. 02Sellers at his peak. Six touchdowns, zero interceptions in his last two games; 1,338 passing yards plus 411 rushing yards on the season behind the 13th-ranked adjusted EPA/play offense. His mobility is the natural antidote to Tennessee’s nation-leading pass rush.
  3. 03The pressure problem. MacIntyre has been pressured 21 times on 78 dropbacks — 13 in his two starts — behind a line outside the top 90 in havoc allowed since Week 2 (PFF). Stewart is back (one sack, two forced fumbles in 29 snaps vs Florida) with a full bye week to prepare.
  4. 04The counterweight. Tennessee’s confirmed 16 takeaways dwarf South Carolina’s 5, the Vols’ turnover margin is roughly +11 to the Gamecocks’ −3, and the nation’s 5th-ranked EPA/rush run game meets South Carolina’s 68th-ranked run defense. That is why this projects as one point, not ten.

Confidence: low. The consensus was split down the middle on Tuesday — the models (ESPN’s matchup predictor at 59.9%, Nolan Analytics 30–21, SEC Scouts 31–27) take Tennessee; the market (South Carolina −2.5), SI, and Pickswise take the Gamecocks — and Wednesday’s staff picks tilted it toward South Carolina: USA Today’s four-man panel swept the Gamecocks (31–27, 24–21, 26–23, 27–17) and ESPN’s Greg McElroy picked South Carolina 27–24. This call sides with the situational half of that split — bye, home, letdown spot, Sellers’ form — against Tennessee’s real fundamental edges. A one-point margin is still a coin flip with a lean.

Read: Heupel declined to name a starter Monday — “you guys will figure it out when we get to gameday” — but by Wednesday CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Tennessee is expected to start MacIntyre for a third straight game, matching On3’s Pete Nakos, who said it “would be a surprise” if it isn’t MacIntyre. Brandon is healthy but didn’t play against Alabama. This is weakness-on-weakness: Tennessee’s pass offense ranks 119th in EPA/pass and South Carolina’s pass defense ranks 120th. MacIntyre’s three picks in two starts remain the swing variable.

Read: Sellers is the best player on either roster right now — Walter Camp national offensive player of the week after five touchdowns at Florida, and PFF tagged him with an 80.9 offensive grade that week. Tennessee’s defense ranks 6th nationally in success rate with seven picks and just suffocated Alabama, but a mobile quarterback is the natural antidote to a pass-rush-heavy front. Sellers at home, off a bye, is the game’s single biggest variable.

Read: The game’s clearest matchup edge. Tennessee ranks 5th nationally in EPA/rush and 6th in offensive rushing success rate; South Carolina is 68th in EPA/rush allowed. Bishop ran for 159 and two touchdowns against Alabama’s front last week. If the Gamecocks crowd the box, MacIntyre’s play-action window opens.

Read: Fuller is a legitimate back having his best season, and Sellers’ legs are a real weapon. But this Tennessee front just held Alabama to 54 rushing yards and leads the country in sacks. The Gamecocks need the run game to protect Sellers, not to win the game alone.

Read: South Carolina’s secondary has been torched through the air in SEC play — 12 passing touchdowns in the first three conference games. Matthews is the one Tennessee receiver who can win deep. The caveat: Tennessee’s passing volume is low (170.3 yards a game in SEC play), so the edge is real but narrow.

Read: South Carolina’s receiving corps is thin — running back Matt Fuller was the only Gamecock over 50 receiving yards in the three games before Florida. Tennessee’s defensive backs have seven interceptions and held Alabama to 141 passing yards. The Vols’ edge, unless Harbor breaks one.

MacIntyre has been pressured 21 times on 78 dropbacks — 13 in his two starts — behind a line outside the top 90 in havoc allowed and outside the top 100 in front-seven havoc allowed since Week 2 (PFF via Pickswise). Tennessee is down seven players for the season, including starting lineman Wendell Moe Jr. Stewart’s return gives a rested front a genuine game-wrecker, and Beamer expects everyone who missed Florida back except nickel Quay’sheed Scott — the bye is healing the Gamecocks at the right time.

Read: South Carolina upgraded the line in the portal, and starting center Carter Miller is expected back after missing the Florida win. Sellers still takes hits and puts the ball on the ground — he was sacked six times in the first four games and has fumbled repeatedly. Tennessee’s front leads the nation in sacks (30) and forced four Alabama turnovers. If Sellers holds the ball, this is where the game turns.

Possession pressure

Tennessee owns one of the country’s best turnover profiles. South Carolina’s is among the SEC’s worst — though the Gamecocks’ Florida game suggests the needle may be moving.

Ball placement & rushing upside

Where premium tracking metrics were unavailable, the analysis uses clearly labeled proxies rather than pretending the missing numbers exist.

6.0

DeSean Bishop’s yards per carry

837 yards on 139 carries, best on either roster. Tennessee ranks 5th nationally in EPA/rush and 6th in offensive rushing success rate — the strongest available proxies for rushing upside on either side.

  • No public on-target, adjusted-completion, or deep-ball accuracy rates were found for either quarterback. Team-level proxy: Tennessee’s pass offense ranks 119th in EPA/pass; South Carolina’s pass defense ranks 120th — a genuine wash. Sellers’ form proxy: 43-of-71 (60.6%) for 505 yards, 6 TD, 0 INT over his last two games, with a PFF 80.9 offensive grade vs Florida.
  • MacIntyre’s form proxy: 66.3% completions, 7.4 yards per attempt, 592 yards with 2 TD and 3 INT in his two starts — steady, but turnover-prone and low-volume (197 yards vs Alabama).
  • Explosive-run proxies: Fuller 6.0 yards per carry (485 yards on 81 attempts) and Sellers 411 rushing yards at 6.1 per carry (confirmed) for South Carolina; Bishop 6.0 for Tennessee.
  • Line-play proxies: sacks allowed vs generated. Tennessee has allowed 18 — tied for 120th nationally; South Carolina has generated 16 through six games (13 through five, plus three vs Florida) — with Stewart back and a bye week, that number should climb. Sellers was sacked 6 times in the first four games. Team efficiency: Tennessee’s offense ranks 123rd in success rate but 5th in EPA/rush; its defense ranks 6th in success rate and 15th in adjusted EPA/play.

Sources & caveats

Statistics are a dated snapshot through Week 7, compiled October 20, 2026 and updated October 21, 2026. The SEC’s Wednesday availability report for this game is due Wednesday night and had not been released at this update, so injury status reflects the most recent reports (Tennessee’s Friday report before Alabama; Shane Beamer’s Tuesday press conference for South Carolina, in which he said everyone who missed the Florida game is expected back except nickel Quay’Sheed Scott, a question mark trending in the right direction). Injury designations, the starting quarterback, and betting lines can change before kickoff.
