Key takeaways

Georgia’s defense scored nearly as many points as Florida’s offense, and the game was effectively over by halftime.

Takeaways were the game

Georgia forced four turnovers and turned them into 17 points. Two Aaron Philo interceptions set up 10 points, and Quintavius Johnson’s strip-sack became Chris Cole’s 66-yard fumble-return touchdown 29 seconds before halftime. Braylon Conley’s end-zone interception in the third quarter killed Florida’s one real comeback drive at the Georgia 3.

Florida’s quarterback plan collapsed

Aaron Philo, back from the shoulder injury, was benched after two interceptions on Florida’s first three series and just 26 passing yards. Tramell Jones Jr. threw for 172 yards in relief but added two turnovers of his own — the strip-sack fumble and the end-zone pick — behind a line that allowed four sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

The ground gap decided the rest

Georgia ran for 217 yards on 42 carries — Nate Frazier and Dwight Phillips Jr. with 67 each, Gunner Stockton adding 45 on 12 keepers — against Florida’s 48 rushing yards. Jadan Baugh, the SEC’s rushing-touchdown leader entering the day, was held to 38 yards on 17 carries in his Atlanta homecoming.

Florida’s defense deserved better

The Gators held Georgia to 318 total yards and 20 offensive points, forced back-to-back three-and-outs to open the second half, and produced the game’s last takeaway when DJ Coleman stripped Talyn Taylor and Myles Graham returned it 42 yards. The offense converted that gift into Florida’s only touchdown — enough to extend the program’s scoring streak to 481 straight games, but nothing more. Georgia moves to 7–1 (5–1 SEC); Florida falls to 5–3 (3–3) with its playoff hopes effectively gone.

Against the call

Our preview projected Georgia 31, Florida 23. The winner was right; the game was never that close.

Projected final
23—31

Georgia by eight — called the winner

Actual: Georgia 27, Florida 8. The pick nailed the side and roughly Georgia’s point total (27 vs. 31 projected) but missed Florida’s score by 15.

Why the margin missed

The preview bet on Baugh shortening the game. Florida’s path to 23 points ran through Jadan Baugh’s 109 yards per game keeping the Gators within one score. Georgia held him to 38 yards on 17 carries, and Florida’s team rushing total was 48 — that path never opened.

The quarterback rust was worse than priced. The call flagged Aaron Philo’s return from a shoulder injury as a question mark, but still assumed functional quarterback play. Instead Philo threw two interceptions on the first three series and was benched; combined with Jones Jr.’s two turnovers, Florida gave Georgia 17 points and a 24–0 halftime hole that no second-half defensive stand could undo.

What the preview got right: Georgia’s defense (15.9 points allowed per game entering) set the floor, Stockton protected the ball (zero turnovers), and Georgia won its sixth straight in the series.

Caveats: (1) Venue — the rivalry was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, not Jacksonville, because of EverBank Stadium renovations; Georgia was the designated home team. The stadium is a dome, so the weather line reflects reported outside conditions at kickoff. (2) Rushing accounting — the official team rushing total for Florida (48 yards) is the NCAA net figure, which deducts sack yardage from the quarterback’s rushing line; individual ball-carrier lines above follow the box-score feed (Jones Jr. 9 for 17 before that adjustment) and therefore sum slightly higher. (3) A complete, verified Florida defensive tackle table was not available in the sources reviewed, so Florida’s defensive section lists only its verified playmakers (Coleman, Graham, Oyebadejo) rather than a full tackle ranking. (4) Some outlets listed Florida as No. 20 (Coaches Poll); rankings shown here are AP, per this page’s convention — Florida No. 17, Georgia No. 3.
