Simulated BCS Top 25 After Week 8 Puts Miami First and Shuffles the Playoff Picture
With one weekend left before the College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first rankings, a simulated run of the old BCS formula has produced a reshuffled Top 25 after Week 8. The exercise, run by BCSKnowHow, applies the former system that balanced computer rankings with human polls and was once used to set the national championship matchup. Miami stayed at the top with a .9837 score after a 52-23 win over Pittsburgh, followed by Ohio State at .9576 after its bye week.
The biggest movement came just below the top two. Indiana climbed four places to third at .8408 after a 13-6 overtime win over Michigan that followed its first loss of the season, while Georgia rose one spot to fourth at .8364 coming off a bye. Notre Dame slipped to fifth, and unbeaten UCLA and Utah each moved up three places to sixth and seventh after wins over Michigan State and Houston.
The SEC presence in the upper part of the list is crowded. Kentucky rose four places to eighth at .7091, Alabama climbed to tenth after a 31-20 win over Texas A&M, and Texas made the largest jump among the teams detailed, rising eight places to eleventh after beating Ole Miss 34-27. LSU moved up five to twelfth after a 38-17 win over Auburn, while Ole Miss fell five places to thirteenth and Texas Tech dropped eight to fourteenth after its first loss, at Cincinnati.
For Tennessee, the value of the exercise is as an early guide to how the committee picture is taking shape before the first official rankings. The simulated list shows several SEC teams already clustered in playoff position and others gaining ground quickly with single wins, which raises the cost of any further slip in conference play. With one more weekend of games before the committee meets for the first time, the margin between contenders in the league remains thin.
