Projection Ranks Tennessee 12th in First Playoff Top 25, Yet Leaves Vols Out of Field

Ahead of the selection committee's first rankings of the 2026 season on Tuesday night, a projection of the initial Top 25 places Tennessee at No. 12 with a 6-2 record. The Volunteers benefit from the nature of their defeats, since each loss came by only a field goal, which strengthens their standing among the crowded group of two-loss teams. Unbeaten Miami leads the projection, followed by Georgia, unbeaten Utah and Kentucky, and those four would receive the first-round byes.

Being ranked 12th, however, would not put Tennessee in the field under this scenario. The bracket guarantees a place to the highest-ranked Group of Six champion, and Boise State, projected 23rd at 7-1, holds that position. The Broncos would therefore claim the final berth and face UCLA in the opening round, leaving the Volunteers as the team displaced despite their place in the rankings. The other projected first-round pairings send Ole Miss against Indiana, Ohio State against BYU and Texas against Notre Dame.

The projection explains why Tennessee's resume remains vulnerable. A convincing victory over Alabama is a clear highlight, but the Volunteers have not yet added many other quality wins. Their remaining home games offer the chance to change that, because Kentucky and LSU both still have to come to Knoxville, and results of that caliber could move Tennessee high enough that an automatic qualifier could no longer push them out.

Kentucky's situation adds further weight to the next game. Projected fourth after six consecutive wins, the Wildcats begin a three-game stretch at Tennessee before facing Florida and then traveling to Missouri, and they may need two wins from that run to protect their position. Texas, projected ninth, also shows what Tennessee is up against, since the Longhorns' road win over the Volunteers forms part of a resume that includes Ohio State and Ole Miss. Tuesday's rankings are only an opening snapshot, but the projection leaves Tennessee close enough to contend and exposed enough that its home stretch will decide the outcome.
