Projection Puts Tennessee 12th in First Playoff Rankings, but Outside the Bracket
The selection committee releases its first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season on Tuesday night, and a projection from On3 ahead of that reveal places Tennessee at No. 12. The Volunteers sit at 6-2, and the projection credits the closeness of their defeats, noting that both losses came by a field goal. That margin helps Tennessee's case when the committee weighs it against the other two-loss teams crowded into the same range.
The strongest item on Tennessee's resume so far is a convincing win over Alabama. Beyond that, the projection notes, the Volunteers do not yet own many quality wins, which leaves their position fragile. That fragility matters because of how the 12-team field is assembled: a spot in the top 12 of the rankings does not by itself guarantee a place in the bracket. A power conference champion ranked outside the top 12 is still guaranteed entry, and so is the highest-ranked Group of Six champion.
That second rule is the one that cuts against Tennessee in this projection. Boise State is projected at No. 23, but as the highest-ranked Group of Six champion the Broncos would take the final spot in the field, bumping the 12th-ranked Volunteers out. The projected bracket instead opens with matchups such as UCLA against Boise State and Notre Dame against Texas, while Miami, Georgia, Utah and Kentucky hold the top four seeds and the first-round byes that now go to the four highest seeds rather than being reserved for conference champions.
Tennessee's route to firmer ground runs through its remaining home games. Kentucky and LSU both still have to visit, and wins there would add the quality results the resume currently lacks and could lift the Volunteers high enough that no automatic qualifier can displace them. The Kentucky game carries extra weight: the Wildcats are projected at No. 4, and their next three games begin with the trip to Tennessee, a stretch the projection says they may need to survive with at least two wins. Texas, projected ninth and at the front of the two-loss group, also illustrates what is at stake, since its road win at Tennessee is a central part of its own resume.
