Tennessee Sits Sixth in SEC in Updated ESPN FPI After Week 8
ESPN has refreshed its Football Power Index for the SEC following Week 8, and Tennessee checks in sixth among conference teams despite a difficult weekend. The Volunteers carry an FPI of 16.8, good for 12th nationally, and the model currently projects them to finish 8-4 as they try to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.
That position puts Tennessee ahead of this week's opponent, Kentucky, even though the Wildcats have drawn plenty of praise this season. Kentucky is 10th in the SEC by FPI at 13.1, though it ranks ninth in the AP Poll, a reminder that the predictive metric and the voters are seeing the league somewhat differently. South Carolina, which just beat Tennessee, is actually below both teams in the FPI at 11th in the conference, underscoring how much the model values overall resume and efficiency over a single result.
At the top of the SEC list, Georgia leads the way with an FPI of 26.5 and a projection to finish 11-1, followed by Alabama, LSU and Texas. Ole Miss rounds out the top five, just ahead of Tennessee. At the other end, Vanderbilt anchors the rankings after a loss to Kentucky dropped the Commodores to 3-5, with Arkansas and Mississippi State also near the bottom.
For Tennessee and coach Josh Heupel, the closing stretch will decide whether the projection holds or slips. The matchup with Kentucky is pivotal, and a visit from LSU to Knoxville also looms large on the remaining schedule. The FPI still rates the Volunteers as a top-12 team nationally, but another loss would make the path to the playoff considerably narrower.
