South Carolina Beats No. 11 Tennessee 27-24 on Field Goal as Time Expires
No. 11 Tennessee lost 27-24 at South Carolina on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium, with the Gamecocks kicking a 48-yard field goal as time expired after recovering a fumble in the final minute. Quarterback George MacIntyre was sacked and lost the ball after a hit from Dylan Stewart, and South Carolina recovered at the 38 with 33 seconds left to set up the winning kick.
The Volunteers had fallen behind quickly. South Carolina opened with a 75-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from LaNorris Sellers to Mazeo Bennett, then added a 31-yard touchdown run by Sellers moments later for a 14-0 lead. Tennessee answered with a long second-quarter drive finished by DeSean Bishop from a yard out, tied the game on a 1-yard fourth-down run by DaSaahn Brame, and took a 21-17 halftime lead on an 8-yard wildcat touchdown run by Mike Matthews with 24 seconds left in the half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, and Tennessee extended its lead early in the fourth when Cooper Ranvier made a 37-yard field goal for a 24-17 advantage. That possession also included the third Tennessee touchdown wiped out by a penalty in the game, this time on a holding call after a throw to Braylon Staley. Penalties had earlier erased long touchdown passes involving Matthews and Brame.
South Carolina tied the game after Tennessee failed on fourth-and-1 at the Gamecocks' 39. Sellers ran five yards for the tying touchdown with 1:17 left, finishing a six-play, 61-yard drive. Tennessee got the ball back with a chance to win, but the fumble in the final minute gave South Carolina the last possession and the walk-off finish.
