The defensive line Tennessee worried about all offseason has become its defense's foundation
When the 2026 season began, the biggest unknown on Tennessee's defense was the defensive front. Seven weeks in, that question has been flipped on its head: the line has produced at a high level, and it has become the unit the rest of the defense is built on.
The production up front has changed what the Volunteers can do defensively. Just as important is the trust running through the unit — all three levels of the defense playing connected to one another — which has effectively reset the defense this season under coordinator Jim Knowles, with line coach Rodney Garner overseeing the group up front.
The payoff showed up most visibly against Alabama, when the front harassed the Crimson Tide throughout a 26-10 win — the kind of performance that turns a preseason concern into a calling card.
For Tennessee, the impact runs beyond one game. A front that can win on its own sets the table for everything Knowles wants to call behind it, and it gives the Vols a defensive identity sturdy enough to travel into the hardest stretch of the season.
