Freshman receiver TK Keys may earn a larger role after late catches against Alabama

TK Keys waited most of the season for a moment that mattered, and he got one late against Alabama. The true freshman receiver caught two passes for 13 yards in the closing stages, including a first down on third down during Tennessee's final touchdown drive, a contested slant against man-to-man coverage that helped keep the clock moving and put the game away.

The contribution was small on the stat sheet but notable for who delivered it. Keys was the top-ranked receiver in the 2026 recruiting class and the No. 10 overall prospect according to 247Sports, and Tennessee flipped his commitment from LSU to land him. Injuries during the spring and summer slowed his start, however, and he has played only sporadically this season behind Radarious Jackson, the Volunteers' third receiver.

Quarterback George MacIntyre made clear afterward how much the staff and teammates valued the performance. He said he told Keys after the game how proud he was of the way the freshman had responded to everything, noting that Keys had worked through injuries after arriving and had earned the right to be on the field in big moments. MacIntyre pointed to the two fourth-quarter catches and said the moment was not too big for him.

Whether that turns into a larger role could be tested quickly. Tennessee has leaned on its running game this season, but its remaining schedule, which includes South Carolina, Kentucky, LSU, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, will likely force more production through the air. South Carolina in particular has been described as strong against the run but vulnerable against the pass, which could create an opening for Keys alongside Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley as Tennessee looks for more downfield plays down the stretch.
