Piece argues Jim Knowles has built Tennessee's defense into the nation's best

Jim Knowles is receiving strong praise for his work with Tennessee's defense, with a piece from All for Tennessee arguing that his turning the unit into the best in the nation cannot be argued.

That is a sweeping claim, and it puts the focus squarely on the transformation of the defense under Knowles. Rather than describing the Volunteers as merely improved, the argument presents them as setting the national standard on that side of the ball.

For Tennessee, a defense viewed at that level changes how the team is judged overall. If the Volunteers can sustain that reputation, it strengthens their case in every big game ahead and makes the defense, rather than a weakness to be managed, the foundation of their identity.
