South Carolina Fined $500,000 After Fans Storm Field Following Upset of Tennessee

South Carolina will pay a $500,000 fine after its fans came onto the field at Williams-Brice Stadium to celebrate the Gamecocks' upset victory over Tennessee. The Southeastern Conference announced the penalty on Sunday, applying its policy governing access to competition areas.

Under that policy, schools are required to keep the playing area limited to participants, coaches, officials, support staff and properly credentialed or authorized individuals. Spectators are not permitted to enter the area before, during or after a game, a rule the conference says is intended to protect both those taking part in the contest and those watching it.

The money from South Carolina's penalty will go to Tennessee, in line with how the conference handles these violations. That creates an unusual balance for the Volunteers, who were themselves fined $500,000 after their win over Alabama the previous week, so the amount coming in offsets the amount they were assessed then.

Field celebrations after major wins have continued around college football even as conferences have tightened their penalties, and the SEC's approach is among the most expensive for schools. For Tennessee, the result on the field still stands as an upset loss, but the league's ruling means the program will receive the payment tied to what followed the final whistle in Columbia.
