South Carolina Strikes Twice Early to Lead No. 11 Tennessee 14-0 in First Quarter
South Carolina could hardly have asked for a better start against No. 11 Tennessee on Saturday in Columbia, scoring on its first two possessions to build a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers accounted for both touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, as the Gamecocks, coming off a bye week, looked sharp from the opening kick.
The first drive covered 75 yards in 10 plays. Sellers completed six of his seven passes for 57 yards on the possession and added a 12-yard run, before connecting with Mazeo Bennett Jr. out of the backfield for the opening score. The extra point made it 7-0, and Tennessee's offense did nothing to answer, going three-and-out on its first possession.
South Carolina needed almost no time to extend the margin. The Gamecocks went 58 yards in just two plays on their next possession, finishing with Sellers running 31 yards for a touchdown. That made it 14-0 with 8:17 still remaining in the first quarter of a game televised on ESPN.
For Tennessee, the early hole puts immediate pressure on both sides of the ball. The defense has already given up two very different scoring drives, one methodical and one explosive, while the offense has yet to find any rhythm. How quickly the Vols settle in will decide whether this stays a difficult road afternoon or turns into something far worse.
