Tennessee Stays at No. 16 in Both Polls Heading Into Kentucky Game
Tennessee came out of its bye week without moving in one national poll and with a small gain in the other, leaving the Volunteers at No. 16 in both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. The AP ranking stayed exactly where it had been, while the coaches moved Tennessee up one place to bring the two lists into agreement.
The timing gives Tennessee a clear picture before a major home test. Kentucky will visit Neyland Stadium on Nov. 7, and the Wildcats climbed in both polls after Ohio State lost 30-18 to USC on Saturday. Kentucky arrives ranked No. 8 by the AP and No. 7 by the coaches, making the matchup one of the most consequential remaining on Tennessee's schedule.
For Josh Heupel's team, the opportunity is straightforward. A win over a top-10 opponent would strengthen Tennessee's position in both the Southeastern Conference race and the College Football Playoff conversation at a point in the season when every result carries added weight. The game also comes just before the season's first playoff rankings are made public.
Those initial College Football Playoff rankings are scheduled to be revealed Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, in the final set of traditional polls released beforehand. Elsewhere of interest to Tennessee, LSU is positioned one spot ahead of the Volunteers at No. 15 and hosts Alabama on Saturday. LSU is set to visit Knoxville on Nov. 21, so a strong showing by the Tigers would only add importance to that later meeting.
