Penalties Wiped Out Three Tennessee Touchdowns in the Loss to South Carolina

Tennessee's loss to South Carolina turned in large part on mistakes of its own making. Three penalties proved especially damaging, wiping three touchdowns off the board and repeatedly undoing the Volunteers' best offensive work.

Instead of celebrating scores, Tennessee was forced to watch those opportunities disappear. Each erased touchdown changed the shape of the game, shifting momentum toward South Carolina and leaving the Volunteers with far less to show for drives that had otherwise reached the end zone.

For Tennessee, the lesson from the defeat is straightforward but painful. Against an SEC opponent, a team can rarely afford to give away one touchdown to a penalty, let alone three, and those self-inflicted setbacks were central to why the Volunteers came up short.
