The Day's Summary
The Third Saturday in October arrived with the playoff picture hanging over it. Tennessee and Alabama each carried one loss into their meeting in Knoxville, leaving the loser with little margin for error the rest of the way. For the Volunteers, at 5-1 behind a defense that had carried them through demanding games against Auburn, Texas and Arkansas, it was also a chance to prove they could win on a national stage after a first half of the season marked by slow offensive starts.
The central question was whether Tennessee could score enough. That burden fell on quarterback George MacIntyre, an inconsistent offensive line and running back DeSean Bishop, with head coach Josh Heupel stressing the need to be better up front rather than waiting until the second half to establish the run. Alabama's defense, ranked 24th nationally against the run and allowing just under 100 rushing yards a game, made that a difficult assignment, even with receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams and starting center Racin Delgatti unavailable for the Crimson Tide.
On the other side, containing quarterback Keelon Russell shaped Tennessee's defensive task. Russell had thrown for just under 1,600 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 225 rushing yards, and his ability to extend plays made him a constant threat. Defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam, already with five sacks, figured to be well placed against a backup center, and Tennessee could also lean on a home crowd in a stadium where no Alabama offensive player had previously played. Kickoff was set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with Alabama favored by 7.5 points.
Around that central preview, the day showed how broadly the game resonated. A College Football 27 simulation offered a lighthearted Week 7 prediction, and columnist Wally Hall, writing in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, placed Alabama-Tennessee at the center of the national slate. A win would keep a 10-2 finish and a playoff push within reach for Tennessee and leave the remaining schedule looking manageable; a loss would make that path considerably harder.
